A lot of us think that we should just be able to 'get over' difficult experiences and we aim to move past them focusing on the present and the future. However, we may find that certain experiences seem to stick with us in the form of nightmares, intrusive thoughts or memories and overwhelming emotional or physiological responses. We may also be experiencing more ingrained patterns of behaviour and vulnerabilities that we can observe are unhealthy, but then don't seem to be able to change or alter no matter how hard we try.
Adverse experiences, especially adverse experiences during childhood, can have a significant impact on our lives and wellbeing (you can read more about this here: Adverse Childhood Events).
The good news is that as research in child development, interpersonal neurobiology, and human resilience grows we we are expanding what we know about post traumatic growth and resilience.
If you are struggling with some of the above symptoms there are ways that you can improve your quality of life, health and wellbeing through body inclusive psychotherapy.
